With a massive area of 125 hectares, the Engineering Projects Department at Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has announced the start of a waste recycling facility project, in coordination with the local government in Karbala.
"Following direct guidance from the representative of the Supreme Religious Authority on the necessity of environmental cleanliness and preventing pollution, Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has begun work on the waste recycling facility project," said head of the department, Hussein Redha Mahdi.
"The project will include several departments including recycling regular waste and medical waste, as well as generating electrical energy through fermenting organic waste and utilizing methane gas to generate energy," added Mahdi.
He pointed out that the facility will be completed in accordance with international specifications approved by a Paris-based environmental protection organization, and will be implemented by a specialized Turkish company.
The 125-hectare facility, which is located on the western side of the province, has a capacity of 1500 tons and will be an essential source of energy and pollution prevention. It is expected to be completed and operational within 18 months.
