Denmark renews push to ban Islamic call to prayer

Denmark's Immigration Minister, Morten Bødskov, has reignited debate after announcing plans to pursue a nationwide ban on the Islamic call to prayer (Adhan), arguing that it has no place in Denmark and represents what he described as a growing "Islamization" of public space.

According to The Telegraph, Bødskov said the government will examine the legal feasibility of prohibiting the public broadcast of the Adhan. "The call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops," he said, adding that the practice does not belong in Denmark.

The proposal marks the third attempt by a Danish immigration minister to establish a legal framework for banning the public call to prayer, following similar initiatives in 2020 and 2025.

Although Denmark's constitution guarantees freedom of religion, the government is expected to assess whether such a ban would comply with constitutional protections while balancing the interests of nearby residents. In many parts of the country, including Copenhagen, local noise regulations already prevent mosques from broadcasting the call to prayer through loudspeakers.

Home to about six million people, Denmark has an estimated Muslim population of 270,000 and around 100 mosques. The country has adopted some of Europe's strictest immigration policies in recent years under Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
