USA: Record number of Muslims elected to office in 2026
A record 255 Muslims are serving in elected office across the United States in 2026, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, and CAIR Action.
The organizations’ 2026 Directory of Elected Muslim Officials identifies Muslim public servants across 26 states and nearly every level of government.
Local government has the largest share, with 98 Muslim council members. Another 63 serve in education, including school-related elected positions, while 46 serve in state legislatures.
The directory also includes 11 mayors, 18 judges and four Muslim members of the U.S. House of Representatives, along with 15 officials serving in other elected positions.
Muslim women account for 110 of the 255 officials, or 43.1%, highlighting significant female representation in Muslim elected leadership.
CAIR says the final number grew after Muslim communities, local leaders and CAIR chapters provided information about additional officials who were not included in the preliminary count.
The organization says the record reflects growing Muslim civic engagement and political participation, with Muslim Americans increasingly serving their communities at the local, state and federal levels.
