The blind of Karbala shine on stage: “My Identity is my Insight” transcends challenges
As part of the Children’s Theater Festival organized by the University of Karbala, the Noor Al-Imam Al-Hussain Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired—affiliated with the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain—has made a vibrant and meaningful contribution. Through its participation, the Institute delivers a powerful humanitarian message: the loss of physical sight does not diminish inner insight, but can instead deepen it.
Ahmed Radi Hamad, Educational Assistant at the Institute, stated that the Institute is taking part in the festival—organized by the University’s Human Rights Division in cooperation with several supporting entities—held at Al-Sanhouri Hall in the College of Law.
He explained that the Institute’s contribution includes a short theatrical performance alongside purposeful vocal recitations, reflecting the festival’s theme, “My Identity is my Insight.” Through these performances, students aim to convey a clear message: that blind individuals are capable, creative, and able to excel across various fields despite the challenges they face.
Hamad noted that, although the students encounter difficulties—particularly with stage movement and the technical demands of performance—they overcome them through determination and perseverance. Their presentation, he said, reflects their energy and creativity while affirming their active and valuable role in society.
He also called on institutions, government bodies, and relevant stakeholders to support and invest in this creative segment of society, emphasizing the exceptional abilities they possess and their potential to contribute meaningfully across different sectors.
In a related development, the Institute continues to expand its activities. Recently, it launched the first table tennis tournament for the visually impaired and is planning to establish an Iraqi football league for the blind. It also aims to broaden the establishment of specialized institutes across several Iraqi governorates in the coming years.
