Medical breakthrough in Iraq: Twins cured of rare condition combining Leukemia and Down Syndrome
The Warith International Foundation for Oncology, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain, has announced a significant medical achievement: the successful treatment of a rare condition affecting a pair of twins—marking a first of its kind in Iraq.
In a statement, the Authority reported that the infants were admitted to the Foundation at seven months of age, suffering from a rare disorder involving myeloid leukemia in conjunction with Down syndrome. While documented in global medical literature, this case had not previously been recorded in Iraq.
The Authority explained that the challenge extended beyond the rarity of the condition to its considerable medical complexity. The infants’ young age meant their vital organs were still developing, while the presence of Down syndrome increased their sensitivity to chemotherapy and heightened the risks associated with treatment.
It further noted that each child required an individualized treatment plan, carefully tailored to their specific condition. The medical team developed a specialized protocol based on continuous monitoring and detailed clinical assessment, maintaining a delicate balance between treatment effectiveness and the infants’ ability to tolerate therapy.
According to the statement, every dose was calculated with precision, and all medical decisions were guided by rigorous scientific analysis and advanced clinical expertise.
These efforts ultimately led to a successful outcome, with both infants making a full recovery and leaving the Foundation in good health to reunite with their family—transforming a case marked by deep concern into one of hope and healing.
The Authority also noted that treatment for children under the age of fifteen is provided free of charge through the “Warith Fund,” supported by the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain. This initiative reflects the Shrine’s ongoing humanitarian commitment to delivering advanced healthcare and helping children return to healthy, normal lives with their families.
