Al-Thaqalayn Cancer Hospital—affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain in Basra—has announced the successful implementation of advanced internal radiation therapy for the first time in Iraq, marking a significant milestone in cancer treatment.

The hospital stated that the technique relies entirely on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI-only), representing a major advancement in the treatment of gynecological cancers.

According to the statement, this precision-based therapy is used to treat uterine and cervical tumors, utilizing MRI scans exclusively for treatment planning. This approach ensures exceptional accuracy in identifying the tumor’s exact location and characteristics.

The technique enables ultra-high-resolution visualization of both the tumor and surrounding tissues, allowing for precise targeting of cancer cells while minimizing radiation exposure to healthy tissue.

The hospital added that this method reduces the need for complex interventional procedures and enhances patient safety and comfort throughout the treatment process.

It also noted that the program is being implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Health’s Medical Evacuation Department, aiming to expand access to this advanced treatment for patients from across Iraq.

This achievement represents a major step forward in advancing gynecological oncology care in Iraq and reflects ongoing efforts to adopt cutting-edge medical technologies in the country.
