After 40 years, Iraq qualifies for the World Cup

Iraq’s national team secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 2–1 victory over Bolivia in a decisive match held Wednesday at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico.

The “Lions of Mesopotamia” took an early lead in the 10th minute through Ali Al-Hamadi. Bolivia responded in the 38th minute with an equalizer from Moises Paniagua, ending the first half level at 1–1.

In the 53rd minute, striker Aymen Hussein scored the winning goal, finishing a low cross to seal a historic victory for Iraq.

Despite sustained pressure from Bolivia in the closing stages, Iraq’s defense held firm, with goalkeeper Ahmed Basil making several key saves. The final whistle confirmed Iraq’s return to the World Cup after a 40-year absence.
