The General Secretariat of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has announced the commencement of design and planning work for an integrated medical city in Qadisiyah Governorate. Considered one of Iraq’s most significant healthcare projects, the medical city will span 22 hectares and serve as a specialized center for cancer treatment, offering advanced medical services to residents of Qadisiyah and neighboring governorates.

Engineer Mohammed Dhiya, Head of the Strategic Projects Department, stated, “We have begun preparing the designs and plans for the integrated medical city project in Diwaniyah Governorate, which is regarded as one of the most prominent major health projects in the country.”

He explained that the medical city will comprise two main hospitals: one dedicated to cancer treatment and another general hospital that will include departments for obstetrics, surgery, gynecology, and internal medicine.

Dhiya added that the designs, once completed, will adhere to the latest international standards in medical planning, including optimal department distribution, appropriate ward capacity, and single-bed rooms that meet global specifications to ensure patient comfort and strengthen infection control measures.

He further noted that the medical city will be equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities, including advanced radiology units, modern laboratories, and specialized high-precision technologies for cancer care.

The project will also feature a variety of service and support structures, including housing for doctors and nursing staff, an electromechanical services building, a prayer hall, and various public service facilities, along with extensive green spaces and ample parking for patients and staff.

Dhiya concluded, “Through this project, the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain aims to provide a comprehensive treatment environment that enhances healthcare services in Diwaniyah and neighboring provinces, in line with its vision of supporting the Iraqi health sector with high-quality, humanitarian, and service-driven initiatives.”

Dr. Haider Al-Abadi, Head of the Shrine’s Health Authority and supervisor of its hospitals, added, “This hospital is part of Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi Al-Karbalaey’s vision to ensure cancer treatment coverage across all Iraqi provinces. This vision includes building five major cancer treatment hospitals in Baghdad, Basra, Diwaniyah, Kirkuk, and Karbala.”

He continued, “These main hospitals will be supported by branch hospitals in neighboring provinces. Iraq records around 40,000 new cancer cases annually, and more than half a million Iraqis are currently receiving cancer treatment within the country.”
