Interior Ministry announces decline in crime rates across Iraq, comparing favorably with Europe
The Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced on Friday, October 31, 2025, that the national crime rate has dropped to its lowest level in recent years.
Brigadier General Miqdad Miri, Director of Public Relations and Media at the Ministry, stated that “the Ministry of Interior has made substantial progress across its various sectors during 2024–2025,” emphasizing that “the scope of work accomplished is equivalent to 10 to 12 years of effort — a remarkable achievement.”
He added that the Ministry’s anti-narcotics initiatives have reached their highest levels of effectiveness both domestically and internationally, yielding “significant and unprecedented results.” According to Miri, drug use in Iraq is on the decline, and “the situation is now far better than in many other countries.”
Miri noted that the Ministry has recorded “the greatest overall reduction in crime rates nationwide,” citing official statistics from the past two years that reflect a consistent and notable downward trend.
He confirmed that “cases of murder, tribal conflicts, armed robbery, kidnapping, and other organized crimes have all seen a significant decline across the country.”
Concluding his remarks, Miri highlighted Iraq’s improving security environment, stating, “We were recently in Europe, and based on current data, Iraq’s crime rate is now lower than that of several European countries.”
