Millions of pilgrims from across Iraq and around the world gathered in the holy city of Karbala to commemorate the Arbaeen of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him)—an event recognized as the largest annual human gathering on Earth.

For days leading up to Arbaeen, vast crowds of pilgrims arrived on foot from various cities and provinces, filling Karbala’s streets and squares in a remarkable display of devotion, unity, and endurance.

The city was enveloped in an atmosphere of deep faith and solemn reverence, marked by the presence of Hussaini service stations (Mawkibs) that lined the roads leading to the two holy shrines. These Mawkibs provided pilgrims with food, water, shelter, medical assistance, and guidance—entirely free of charge, in a spirit of selfless service and solidarity.

Karbala was adorned with mourning banners, black flags, and illuminated lights, as the sounds of lamentations, eulogies, and Hussaini chants echoed through the air. Mourning processions moved through the city, expressing unwavering love and loyalty to Imam Hussain and the Ahlulbayt (peace be upon them).

Local authorities and service agencies operated tirelessly to manage the unprecedented crowds, ensuring smooth traffic flow, security, and the organization of services in a peaceful and safe environment.

This year’s Arbaeen pilgrimage witnessed the participation of pilgrims from dozens of nationalities, symbolizing a powerful message of sacrifice, resistance, and Muslim unity. Beyond its religious significance, the Arbaeen walk continues to stand as a profound humanitarian and spiritual movement that transcends borders, politics, and sectarian divides.
