Judy Wakahiu, Director of the Community Cohesion Program Team at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), affirmed that the program plays a key role in supporting the Government of Iraq to enhance stability and community cohesion.

Wakahiu stated, “The UNDP works closely with the National Committee for the Prevention of Violent Extremism to support the implementation of Iraq's national strategy to combat extremism.”

She explained that the program focuses on developing government action plans, which are executed at the governorate level through local leaders, tribal leaders, religious figures, as well as women and youth, all working together to reduce violent extremism.

The program, she emphasized, is based on a comprehensive approach that brings both the government and society together to ensure sustainable success in combating extremism. Wakahiu also mentioned ongoing efforts to analyze the need for a legal framework specifically designed to prevent violent extremism.

Regarding reintegration efforts, Wakahiu highlighted that the UNDP led the reintegration of Iraqi returnees from northeastern Syria over the past year, assisting 4,300 returnees, in addition to supporting local community members. The assistance provided included livelihood support, housing rehabilitation, mental health care, and strengthening the role of local leaders, tribal figures, religious leaders, and members of peace committees. This approach aims to foster reconciliation and promote community acceptance of returnees, ensuring long-term community cohesion.
