Iraq to chair G77 and China at UN in 2025

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Iraq was elected to chair the Group of 77 and China at the United Nations for the first time.


According to the ministry, “The Republic of Iraq was chosen to lead the Group of 77 and China at the United Nations for 2025; this came through a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Group that discussed Iraq’s nomination for this position."


The statement indicated that "Abbas Kadhim Obaid, Acting Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, delivered a speech in which he highlighted Iraq's vision for its role during its presidency of the group and identified the main aspects of speech."



Obaid added, "Iraq will work to make this presidency a success, which is the first time for Iraq to hold this position over the past 60 years, expressing its gratitude to Asia-Pacific Group for the support and the opportunity, while the members congratulated Iraq, hoping for great leadership."



It is stated that the Group of 77 and China are considered the largest alliance of countries in the United Nations, comprising 134 member states.
