US witnessed an all-time high of Islamophobia incidents in 2023.
The Council of American-Islamic Relations presented a human rights report documenting a surge in reported incidents of discrimination and violence against Muslims and Palestinians in the US in 2023. This increase can be attributed to the growing Islamophobia following the outbreak of the war in Palestine.
The total number of complaints reached 8,061 in 2023, which increased by 56% over the previous year, as it peaked since the Council started recording them nearly 30 years ago. The council stated that about 3,600 cases occurred from October to December.
Likewise, human rights defenders have reported a global rise in Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian bias since the outbreak of the recent conflict in the Middle East.
The report said 2023 saw a "resurgence of anti-Muslim hatred" after the first-ever recorded annual decline in complaints in 2022. In the first nine months of 2023, such incidents averaged about 500 incidents per month before jumping to nearly 1,200 per month in the US last quarter.
The organization compiled the numbers by reviewing public data videos and reports from public calls, emails, and an online complaints system. Contact people whose incidents have been reported in the media.
