Amid growing psychological pressures and daily challenges in society, the Hekayati Center in Najaf stands out as a pioneering initiative dedicated to the psychological and social development of orphans. Through psychotherapy sessions, interactive workshops, and safe spaces for self-expression, the center empowers youth to share their stories and reconnect with themselves using innovative and compassionate methods.

In an exclusive interview with Karbala Now Agency, Mr. Haider Al-Aasam, Director of the Hekayati Center, shared insight into the center's mission and programs.

“Founded in 2021, the Hekayati Center is located in the Al-Adala neighborhood of Najaf. The six-story building is currently in a pilot phase until mid-2025. We’ve already started welcoming orphans registered with Al-Ayn Social Care Foundation, and we also offer paid tours to the general public. The proceeds go toward supporting orphan care,” Al-Aasam explained.

The center offers four main programs as part of its public engagement, including daily visits to its museum, astronomy lab, science and civilization lab, cinema, theater, and swimming pool—combining cultural, recreational, and athletic experiences.

In addition to public programs, the Hekayati Center runs specialized services for Al-Ayn Foundation orphans. One such initiative is a three-month developmental program featuring workshops on emotional intelligence, goal-setting, and personal growth.

“While a father’s presence can never be fully replaced, we aim to provide orphans with mentors, advisors, and a stable support system,” Al-Aasam said. “The center delivers around 14 distinct services, all geared toward building character and cultivating leadership skills. We believe today’s orphan can become tomorrow’s family or community leader.”

Orphan enrollment at the center is based on referrals through direct contact with families. Priority is given to children who have dropped out of school, face psychological or social challenges, or struggle with peer relationships. Upon referral, orphans are placed in long-term rehabilitation programs that also include religious guidance, reintroduction to prayer, and teachings rooted in Islamic values and Sharia principles.

Among the center’s most intensive offerings is a seven-day residential rehabilitation program, where participants stay overnight under the supervision of trained psychological specialists and program coordinators. This immersive program is designed to restore confidence and social stability.

“We consider every orphan who walks through our doors as the most important guest. For many, the center becomes a second home,” Al-Aasam emphasized. “The Al-Ayn Foundation covers all expenses for its registered orphans. We also welcome visits from supporters and donors who are interested in seeing the work firsthand.”

So far, the center has hosted over 3,000 orphans through its one-day cultural and recreational visit program, entirely free of charge for Al-Ayn’s orphans. Reduced admission is offered to the general public and orphans affiliated with other organizations.

“Ultimately, Hekayati Center is not just a place for therapy or entertainment,” Al-Aasam concluded. “It’s a hub for nurturing future leaders—emotionally, socially, and spiritually.”
