Russian ambassador concludes diplomatic mission in Iraq with visit to Imam Ali’s Footstep Mosque in Basra

Russian Ambassador to Iraq Elbrus Kutrashev began his farewell tour in Basra Governorate, marking the conclusion of his diplomatic mission in the country, with visits to several archaeological and heritage sites, including the Mosque of the Footstep of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) in the Zubair District.

Mustafa Al-Husseini, Inspector of Antiquities and Heritage in Basra, told Karbala Now that the ambassador’s visit, accompanied by a delegation, reflected the Russian side’s interest in Basra’s rich cultural and historical heritage. He noted that the governorate is home to numerous archaeological sites and landmarks that reflect its deep history and cultural diversity.

The discussions covered Basra’s heritage landscape, recent developments involving its archaeological landmarks, and the importance of preserving historical sites while highlighting their cultural and historical significance.

The delegation also toured several heritage landmarks across the governorate, most notably the Mosque of the Footstep of Imam Ali in the Zubair District, one of Basra’s prominent religious and heritage sites.

For his part, Ambassador Elbrus Kutrashev expressed his gratitude to Iraq and its people for the hospitality and warm welcome he received throughout his diplomatic service. He said that choosing Basra as the first destination of his farewell tour reflected the special place the governorate holds in his memories of his time in Iraq.

The visit formed part of Kutrashev’s farewell tour following the conclusion of his diplomatic tenure, which was marked by engagement with Iraqi institutions and various social and cultural stakeholders.
