Priceless Islamic manuscripts on sale at Sotheby's Arts of the Islamic World & India event
Sotheby’s London is set to host its biannual Arts of the Islamic World & India auction on April 29, showcasing a selection of Islamic manuscripts and ceramics. The sale will include valuable Quranic manuscripts and rare copies of the Quran, highlighting the exceptional craftsmanship of Islamic calligraphers and artisans.
Among the highlighted items is a large Quranic page from Egypt, dating to the mid-14th century Mamluk era. The page, decorated in Muhaqqaq script, features verses from Surah Al-Hijr. It is estimated to sell for £6,000 to £8,000. The page is bordered in gold and black, with interlaced yellow markers and floral motifs, exemplifying the intricate manuscript production of the Mamluk period.
Another key item is a 14th-century miniature Quran from Iraq, consisting of 174 leaves. Written in Naskh script, with titles in gold surrounded by black, the manuscript features restrained yet intricate decoration, focusing on geometric and vegetal patterns alongside calligraphy. The leather cover is gold-stamped, and the pages are bordered in gold and black, with golden circles and textual divisions marking the verses.
