New mosque in St. John's to host Eid Al-Fitr prayers for growing Muslim community
Muslims in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, will celebrate Eid Al-Fitr this weekend at the newly opened mosque in St. John's, marking the end of Ramadan. The mosque, formerly the Mary Queen of Peace Catholic church, was renovated by the Muslim Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MANAL) to accommodate the growing Muslim community, which has surged from about 100 members in the 1990s to around 10,000 today.
MANAL president Haseen Khan said the new mosque will host two Eid prayers on Eid—at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.—providing a central space for the province’s Muslims to gather and pray together. Khan expressed pride in the mosque’s capacity, location, and parking, emphasizing its importance as a focal point for Muslims in the region.
Khan noted that Ramadan offers a time for reflection and communal unity, adding that the mosque serves not only as a place of worship but also as a community hub for knowledge and support. "We are excited that all Muslims can pray under one roof, bringing joy and unity to our community," he said.
