European Union stands ready to partner with Iraq in achieving inclusive economic growth
Speaking on Tuesday at an event celebrating the partnership and friendship between the European Union and Iraq, EU Ambassador to Iraq Clemens Semtner reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Iraq, stating, “Europe has always been, and will continue to be, a reliable partner to Iraq. It has stood by the Iraqi people during their darkest times, most notably during the war against the terrorist organization ISIS, and has contributed to helping millions of displaced people return to their homes.”
He continued, “The European Union is fully prepared to partner with Iraq in achieving inclusive economic growth, diversifying the economy, addressing climate change, and developing future-oriented technologies.”
Semtner also highlighted the launch of the third edition of the Iraqi National Trade and Investment Forum, scheduled to take place in Baghdad on Wednesday. Organized by the European Union in cooperation with Iraq’s Ministry of Trade, the forum aims to strengthen economic ties and explore investment opportunities by bringing together dozens of European companies and hundreds of Iraqi firms.
He noted that the new Iraqi government, led by Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi, faces numerous challenges, emphasizing that the European Union stands ready to work alongside Iraq to address them.
The ambassador further stressed that the EU supports efforts to consolidate weapons under state control, reform the Iraqi economy, and combat corruption. He affirmed that Iraq and its people possess the foundations and potential necessary to build a bright, prosperous, and peaceful future, calling for stronger joint efforts to achieve these objectives.
The celebration was held at Al-Mansour Theater in Baghdad, with Iraq’s Minister of Foreign Affairs attending as the guest of honor. The event was also attended by Iraqi government officials, members of the Council of Representatives, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and prominent figures from the Iraqi and European business communities. The gathering celebrated the enduring partnership and friendship between the European Union and Iraq and its people.
