Pope Leo XIV calls for end to hostilities in Yemen amid worsening humanitarian crisis
Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep concern over Yemen’s deteriorating humanitarian situation, calling for an immediate end to hostilities and urging efforts to achieve peace throughout the country and the wider region.
According to reports, the head of the Catholic Church appealed for an end to the fighting, stressing that the people of Yemen and communities across the region deserve to live in peace and security.
The pope voiced particular concern over the situation in Taiz, southwestern Yemen, where residents continue to face shortages of food, clean water, and essential medical services.
Meanwhile, escalating clashes and worsening fuel shortages are threatening water supply systems supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). These systems reportedly serve approximately three million people across Yemen, including around 1.6 million children, raising concerns about the humanitarian consequences of further disruptions.
Pope Leo XIV warned that the devastating effects of war extend beyond immediate casualties and physical destruction. Armed conflicts also deepen poverty, undermine social stability, damage communities, and leave lasting economic and social consequences.
He emphasized that the toll of war on individuals and societies has become increasingly evident, highlighting the urgent need to pursue peaceful solutions to regional conflicts and protect civilian populations from further suffering.
