United Nations backs Karbala’s nomination as Capital of Islamic Culture

During his visit to the holy city of Karbala, the United Nations envoy to Iraq, Mr. Mohammed Hassan, announced a UN initiative supporting the nomination of Karbala as the Capital of Islamic Culture, in recognition of its historical, religious, and cultural importance.

In a press statement delivered during his Muharram visit, Mr. Hassan said, “I was eager to visit the holy city of Karbala because of its profound human and cultural value. I witnessed firsthand a powerful image of a united and cohesive Iraq, where the spirit of national identity is expressed in its most beautiful form.”

He added, “Karbala has deep historical roots and holds a unique place in the hearts of Arabs and Muslims across the world. With millions visiting annually for religious rituals, the city is highly deserving of the title Capital of Islamic Culture.”

Mr. Hassan also expressed confidence in Karbala’s future, stating, “The city is on a promising path of progress and development. It is among the most prepared governorates in Iraq to attract investment and implement strategic development projects that will enhance its economy and public services.”
