Khan Al-Nikhaila, one of Karbala's most prominent historical landmarks
Khan Al-Rubu', aka Khan Al-Nikhaila, is one of the most prominent ancient khans (rest stops), located on the Karbala-Najaf road. It is considered one of the historical and archaeological landmarks of the city of Karbala, and is approximately 16 km away from it.
Khan Al-Rubu' (quarter) was given this name due to its location being a quarter of the distance between the provinces of Karbala and Najaf. Its construction dates back to the Ottoman era, when it was used as a rest stop for caravans and travelers.

The khan was built in the shape of a square, with each side measuring 86 meters long, in the middle of which is an open courtyard surrounded by a group of rooms. Brick and plaster were the basic materials used in building the khan.

The khans built at that time were similar in terms of their planning and architectural construction. Two other khans were built on the same road, namely Khan Al-Hammad (Khan Al-Nas) and Khan Al-Musalla.

Today, Khan Al-Rubu' has become a place for holding cultural events, as it witnesses the annual Al-Nikhaila Festival, which embodies Karbala and the Iraqi culture in general through various events, such as theatre, music, sculpture, painting, and other popular and traditional arts and literature.
