The archaeological and tourism landscape of Iraq’s Karbala Governorate is witnessing a remarkable revival of one of its most imposing and historically significant landmarks. As the official opening of the Al-Ukhaidir Fortress rehabilitation project approaches, the centuries-old citadel is preparing to welcome visitors and researchers once again, presenting a renewed appearance that combines its architectural authenticity with modern restoration standards.

Located approximately 50 kilometers southwest of the city of Karbala, Al-Ukhaidir Fortress is a striking example of early Islamic military and architectural engineering. The vast complex is enclosed by massive walls reinforced with imposing circular towers, demonstrating both the defensive requirements of the period and the sophistication of its construction.

Inside the fortress are a principal palace, prayer hall, residential quarters, and spacious courtyards. Rehabilitation and Restoration Preserve the Fortress’s Heritage
