Ministry of Planning: Unemployment expected to drop to 13% in 2025
The Ministry of Planning announced that Iraq’s unemployment rate is projected to decline from 16.5% to 13% in 2025, driven by government efforts to stimulate key productive sectors and expand job opportunities.
Ministry spokesperson Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi said the First Scientific Conference on Addressing Unemployment and Poverty in Iraq was held in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education, with participation from government bodies, universities, and the private sector.
He explained that the government is focusing on strengthening non-oil sectors, expanding investment, and implementing strategic projects aimed at boosting employment and local development, while aligning national plans with Sustainable Development Goals.
Al-Hindawi added that current policies target private sector job creation through improving the business environment, supporting SMEs, expanding financing programs, and aligning education and vocational training with labor market needs.
He noted that public works programs are also being used to create rapid employment opportunities, particularly for youth and vulnerable groups, in partnership with international organizations and the private sector.
He said recent data shows unemployment has already fallen due to growth in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, cement, and food production, which have generated thousands of jobs.
He stressed the importance of stronger links between universities and the labor market, as well as developing technical education and entrepreneurial skills to further reduce unemployment.
