Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture achieves self-sufficiency in key crops
The Ministry of Agriculture announced on Sunday that its support for agricultural research has led to the development of high-yield seed varieties suited to local conditions, helping the country achieve self-sufficiency in several crops and begin exporting surplus production.
Undersecretary Mahdi Sahar Al-Jubouri stated that the Ministry’s strategy focuses on strengthening agricultural research to address climate change challenges. He noted that efforts have been directed toward developing seed varieties that are high-yielding and resilient to salinity and drought, covering vegetable, fodder, and strategic crops.
He added that these initiatives have supported stable agricultural production and enabled self-sufficiency in vegetables, fodder crops, wheat, and barley, as well as yellow corn among summer crops.
Al-Jubouri emphasized that these achievements reflect coordinated efforts between research, extension, and training departments, along with provincial agricultural directorates, in adopting and localizing modern farming technologies. He also highlighted the role of farmers in sustaining production across Iraq.
He concluded by reaffirming that Iraq has reached self-sufficiency in multiple agricultural products and is now exporting surplus output.
