Iraq commits to clearing mines and explosive remnants by end of 2028
Iraq’s Ministry of Environment confirmed on Sunday that the country remains internationally committed to clearing all mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) by the end of 2028, while stressing the urgent need to prioritize the issue at the national level.
Administrative Undersecretary Iktifa Al-Hasnawi stated that Iraq is obligated under international agreements to declare the country free of mines and ERW by the 2028 deadline. However, she noted that achieving this goal faces significant challenges, particularly due to limited financial allocations.
Al-Hasnawi explained that mine action efforts currently rely largely on national capabilities, alongside select investment projects carried out in coordination with authorized demining companies.
She also revealed that the United States has suspended its international support for Iraq’s mine clearance program, further complicating ongoing operations. In light of these developments, Al-Hasnawi called on the next government to give the issue serious and sustained attention by providing adequate financial resources and logistical backing for national teams.
She further emphasized the importance of provincial authorities playing an active role, urging governors to commit to supporting clearance operations within their respective provinces to help Iraq meet its 2028 target.
