The Engineering and Technical Projects Department at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine continues to advance work at a rapid pace on the expansion project of the Al-Aqeelah Zainab (peace be upon her) Courtyard, achieving significant progress in the construction of the Basement of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him)—one of the most vital service and worship areas within the project.

Engineer Hussain Redha Mahdi, head of the department, stated, “We have reached highly advanced stages in the construction of the Basement of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), located within the Al-Aqeelah Zainab Courtyard. It is one of the most important worship spaces dedicated to serving pilgrims, and the completion rates are very promising.”

He explained that the basement spans an area of approximately 6,000 square meters and lies 15 meters below ground level. It has been designed according to advanced engineering standards, with careful attention to circulation flow, ventilation systems, and smart lighting. The space is equipped with comfortable areas for prayer and visitation, along with fully integrated service facilities to meet the needs of pilgrims.

The Al-Aqeelah Zainab Courtyard project is part of a broader strategy by the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine to expand the sacred area and enhance the visitor experience—particularly during major pilgrimage seasons. The design reflects a thoughtful balance between architectural heritage and the functional needs of modern pilgrimage, ensuring that the growing number of visitors are accommodated in a space that is both spiritually resonant and physically comfortable.
