Tourism Ministry: 65 foreign archaeological missions operating in Iraq, including 25 Italian teams
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced Wednesday that 65 foreign archaeological missions representing various nationalities are currently working in Iraq, including 25 Italian missions, three of which are operating in Baghdad. The ministry also revealed plans to develop archaeological sites and revitalize tourism in cooperation with international organizations.
Ali Obeid, head of the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage, said the 65 foreign missions are conducting archaeological work across the country. Of the 25 Italian missions, three are engaged in excavation and research activities in Baghdad, while the remaining teams are distributed across several Iraqi governorates.
Obeid explained that the Authority has developed a plan in coordination with international organizations to ensure the preservation and long-term sustainability of cultural heritage sites, as well as protect architectural remains uncovered during excavations.
The plan includes installing protective roofing over archaeological sites in accordance with international standards and establishing designated visitor pathways to facilitate movement and improve access while safeguarding the sites.
He added that the plan also includes establishing visitor reception centers and introducing measures to revitalize the tourism sector, including installing directional and informational signs to guide visitors and provide information about archaeological cities and sites.
