International Museum of the Prophet Muhammad and Islamic Civilization Opens in Senegal
Senegal recently opened the International Museum of the Prophetic Biography and Islamic Civilization in Dakar, making it the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa and the third worldwide, after Saudi Arabia and Morocco.
The opening ceremony, attended by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, highlighted the museum’s goal of deepening understanding of Islamic civilization and the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny). The museum is an extension of the Prophetic Biography Museum in Medina, managed by the Muslim World League.
Featuring 35 interactive screens in six languages, the museum offers access to 330 books and encyclopedias. Exhibits explore the life of the Prophet, his companions, and significant historical events. Notable displays include models of Mecca and Medina from his time and a 3D replica of his chamber.
Scientific project coordinator Mohamed Saeed Ba explained that the initiative was inspired by former President Macky Sall and took three years to complete. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM local time.
