Arabic calligraphy is a means of serving the Quran, says Chinese calligrapher
A Chinese calligrapher participating in the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial has highlighted the role of Arabic calligraphy in bridging cultures and serving the Quran, emphasizing its spiritual significance and artistic beauty.
Haj Noor-al-Din explained that his artistic journey reflects an interaction between Chinese cultural heritage and the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy, bringing together two distinct traditions while contributing to the preservation and promotion of the Arabic script.
The Chinese artist noted that his engagement with Arabic calligraphy represents an artistic approach that combines his cultural identity with Arab and Islamic artistic traditions. Drawing on his expertise and artistic knowledge, he has created works inspired by the spirit of Arabic calligraphy while retaining the distinctive character of his own style, shaped by the convergence of these two cultural traditions.
He emphasized that Arabic calligraphy is more than a means of written communication; it is a visual art form rich in spiritual meaning and aesthetic expression. This is particularly evident in the transcription of the Holy Quran, which has given calligraphy a distinguished place in Islamic civilization and inspired artists from diverse cultural backgrounds to explore the art form and develop their own distinctive styles.
Running from October 7 to October 15, the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial brings together calligraphers and artists from around the world to celebrate Arabic calligraphy. The event showcases a variety of calligraphic styles and schools while promoting cultural dialogue and mutual understanding through the visual arts.
Haj Noor-al-Din’s participation highlights the ability of art to transcend geographical and linguistic boundaries, creating opportunities for cultural exchange and mutual appreciation. His work also underscores the enduring significance of Arabic calligraphy as a distinctive form of artistic expression and a means of connecting diverse cultures through a shared appreciation of beauty and spirituality.
