Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director of the UN World Food Program (WFP), said Monday that 20 million people in Sudan are facing acute hunger, while 14 million have been displaced by the ongoing conflict.

In remarks to the press, Skau said that accessing the Sudanese city of El Fasher remains “extremely difficult” because of the fighting and the inability to cross battle lines.

He warned that Sudan is “not receiving the attention it deserves despite the scale of the humanitarian disaster,” adding that about 5 million people are facing emergency levels of food insecurity.

Skau also said that nearly 200,000 people in Sudan are experiencing catastrophic levels of hunger, with conditions approaching famine.

Meanwhile, explosions rocked Al-Damazin, the capital of Sudan’s Blue Nile region in the southeast, overnight Sunday into Monday. The drone attack was attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as its forces and allied groups advanced toward the city, which is sheltering tens of thousands of displaced people.

The developments come amid the war between Sudan’s army and the RSF, which began in April 2023. The conflict has killed more than 200,000 people, according to estimates from aid workers, and has triggered what humanitarian organizations describe as the world’s largest displacement and hunger crises.
