Ali Yassin Abdul-Ridha, Director of Relations and Media and spokesperson for Iraq's General Tourism Authority, said the Authority is coordinating with the Ministry of Environment to develop practical solutions to environmental challenges and pollution caused by industrial and oil activities.

He said the cooperation focuses on incorporating environmental standards into development plans for tourist and archaeological sites, strengthening environmental awareness programs, and preserving the sustainability and appeal of these destinations.

Abdul-Ridha added that the Authority is promoting ecotourism by encouraging investment in environmentally friendly projects and supporting natural attractions, particularly the marshlands and rural areas, while safeguarding their ecological balance. It is also preparing environmental guidelines for tourism facilities to ensure compliance with approved regulations.

On infrastructure, he said the Authority is working with the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Municipalities and traffic directorates to improve road networks leading to tourist and archaeological sites by widening key roads, opening alternative routes, organizing tourist bus traffic, and designating dedicated lanes for tour groups.

He also noted ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Interior to simplify tourist visa procedures through an electronic visa system and other modern mechanisms to facilitate entry and improve the movement of tour groups.

According to Abdul-Ridha, these initiatives form part of a broader government strategy to strengthen Iraq's tourism sector as a key economic driver and expand its appeal to regional and international visitors.
