The United Nations Development Programme's Resident Representative in Iraq, Titon Mitra, has praised the Iraqi government's efforts to combat corruption, highlighting the establishment of the Supreme Council for Integrity and Asset Recovery as a key step in strengthening transparency and accountability.

Speaking on Wednesday, Mitra said the current government has taken vigorous measures to address corruption and emphasized that the UNDP remains committed to supporting Iraq by providing technical assistance, as well as sharing international expertise and best practices.

He noted that the necessary legal and governance frameworks for asset recovery are already in place, but stressed that effective implementation remains essential to recovering misappropriated public funds.

Mitra added that estimates indicate tens of billions of dollars in assets could potentially be recovered. If those estimates are accurate and the funds are successfully returned, he said, they could make a significant contribution toward reducing Iraq's current budget deficit.
