The holy city of Karbala witnessed the launch of the historic Tuwaireej Run on Sunday afternoon, marking the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him). Millions of mourners from Iraq and abroad took part in this powerful expression of grief and solidarity.

The massive procession began at Qantara Al-Salam, located approximately four kilometers from the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain, moving through Al-Jumhuriya Street and into the shrine itself. From there, participants continued through the space between the two holy shrines, ultimately reaching the Holy Shrine of Aba Al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon him). This took place under heavy security and with full-scale service mobilization to ensure the safety and smooth movement of the crowds.

Chanting timeless slogans of mourning and devotion, the participants renewed their pledge to uphold the values and legacy of Imam Hussain and his eternal stand for justice and sacrifice. The Tuwaireej Run is recognized as one of the largest peaceful gatherings in the world, held annually on Ashura, with voices resounding in unison, "O Hussain! O Hussain!"

The origins of this mourning ritual date back more than 130 years, when the people of Tuwaireej spontaneously ran in grief upon hearing of Imam Hussain's martyrdom. What began as an act of devotion has since grown into a global symbol of allegiance and remembrance. Today, it stands as one of the most significant Ashura rituals in the Islamic world, uniting millions in a deeply spiritual and humanitarian expression of mourning.
