The Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has begun constructing 250 additional homes at the Al-Thaqalayn Residential Complex in Basra as part of a project to provide housing for orphans, needy families, and low-income households.

Resident engineer Faraj Jumaa said the new units are part of the first phase of the project, which includes 1,000 homes. The first batch of 250 homes has already been completed, handed over to beneficiaries, and is now occupied.

Construction is underway on the foundations, plumbing, and sewage infrastructure. Work on the underground utility networks has progressed in 170 of the 250 units, while foundations have been completed for 32 homes.

The new houses feature an updated design, with each unit covering 210 square meters compared to the previous 150 square meters, providing larger living spaces while maintaining modern amenities.

Infrastructure development is also continuing, including roads, sidewalks, electrical substations, water and sewage networks, and stormwater drainage systems. Plans are in place to complete and hand over the 250 new homes by the end of the year.

The Al-Thaqalayn Residential Complex, implemented by the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine in Basra Governorate under the directives of the representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi Al-Karbalaey, spans approximately 125 hectares and will ultimately include 3,000 residential units, along with schools, a health center, markets, and a mosque.
