A first for Iraq: Warith International Foundation completes 200 therapeutic catheterization procedures for retinal tumors in children
Warith International Foundation for Oncology, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has achieved a major medical milestone in Iraq by successfully performing 200 therapeutic catheterization procedures for pediatric retinal tumors using the intra-arterial chemotherapy technique.
The achievement represents a significant advancement in the treatment of childhood retinal tumors, helping preserve children's eyes and vision while reducing the need for surgical eye removal in advanced cases.
In a statement, the Foundation said the procedures were carried out by delivering chemotherapy directly to the tumor through the ophthalmic artery, allowing for highly targeted treatment while avoiding exposure of the entire body to high doses of medication.
The Foundation explained that this precise approach helps reduce the severe side effects associated with traditional chemotherapy, which affects the whole body, while improving tumor control and increasing the possibility of preserving the eye and its visual function.
It added that the center has begun receiving patients from outside Iraq following growing recognition of its specialized services. The treatment program is supported by a multidisciplinary medical team that includes ophthalmologists, pediatric oncology specialists, and neuro-interventional radiologists, working together under internationally recognized standards for diagnosis and treatment.
The Foundation said this achievement reflects the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine’s ongoing efforts to advance Iraq’s healthcare sector by introducing advanced medical technologies, attracting specialized expertise, and developing treatment services that provide patients and their families with renewed hope.
