First-of-its-kind in Iraq: Imam Al-Hadi Center expands comprehensive care for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy patients
The Imam Al-Hadi Center for Neuromuscular Disorders, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, continues to provide specialized care through its monthly clinic for patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), offering integrated medical and psychological support for patients and their families.
Director of the center, Dr. Saleh Al-Jabri, said the clinic follows the latest treatment protocols while providing regular medical evaluations and ongoing family support to improve patients' quality of life.
He explained that some families face challenges in ensuring children consistently take their medication due to the demands of daily care, making regular follow-up visits essential to reinforce treatment adherence and provide guidance. Since opening three months ago, the clinic has treated 65 patients.
Al-Jabri noted that the clinic is the first of its kind in Iraq to place a strong emphasis on psychological assessment for both children and their families, helping them adapt to the condition while improving mental well-being. The clinic also performs routine examinations, including chest assessments, oxygen saturation monitoring, and pulmonary function tests to detect respiratory complications and develop appropriate treatment plans.
He added that regular screenings have enabled doctors to identify serious health conditions before symptoms appeared, including a recent case of severe thyroid dysfunction that was promptly treated. The clinic also offers individualized nutritional counseling to support healthy growth, weight management, and eating difficulties.
Through the Imam Al-Hadi Center, the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine aims to provide comprehensive, long-term care that enhances the health, well-being, and quality of life of children living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
