New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended an Ashura mourning ceremony at the Al-Khoei Center in Queens on Thursday, joining members of the Muslim community in commemorating the 10th of Muharram.

The mayor spent more than 30 minutes at the gathering, where he paid tribute to the legacy of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and the enduring message of Karbala.

Reflecting on the significance of Ashura, Mamdani described Imam Hussain’s stand as a timeless symbol of courage and justice.

“Justice is something worth fighting for,” he said, emphasizing the universal values embodied in Imam Hussain’s (peace be upon him) sacrifice.

Following the ceremony, the mayor shared a photo from the event on social media, reiterating his respect for the occasion and the principles it represents.

Community leaders welcomed Mamdani’s participation, describing it as a meaningful gesture of solidarity with New York’s diverse Muslim communities and a reflection of the city’s commitment to religious and cultural inclusion.

Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. Observed annually by millions around the world, it serves as a reminder of the values of sacrifice, justice, and steadfastness in the face of oppression.
