More than 2,000 cameras deployed for Muharram pilgrimages
The Electronic Surveillance Unit of the Holy Imam Hussain Shrine has completed extensive upgrades to its monitoring and broadcasting systems ahead of Muharram events, including the flag-changing ceremony and major pilgrimage gatherings.
According to Engineer Naseer Al-Taie, head of the unit, new cameras have been installed along key routes surrounding the shrine, while surveillance systems have been prepared to monitor the Tuwaireej Run procession and other high-density gathering areas.
The upgrades also include backup video display systems, enhanced recording and server infrastructure, and a dedicated operations room for real-time crowd management and monitoring.
Al-Taie said the shrine will operate 69 smart cameras as part of a broader network of 2,056 cameras deployed across its facilities and pilgrimage routes. Technical teams have also maintained network equipment, display screens, and backup power systems to ensure uninterrupted operations during the pilgrimage season.
The measures are aimed at strengthening security, improving crowd management, and supporting services for the millions of pilgrims expected to visit during Muharram.
