Imam Zain Al-Abideen Teaching Hospital, affiliated with the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain, announced the successful completion of Iraq’s first two simultaneous liver transplant surgeries, marking a major milestone for the country’s healthcare sector.

Hospital Director Dr. Abdul Rahman Ismail said the achievement was accomplished with the support of the representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi Al-Karbalaey, describing it as a significant qualitative advancement in Iraq’s medical capabilities.

He explained that liver transplantation is among the world’s most complex surgical procedures and noted that both operations were successfully performed after more than a year and a half of preparation and planning.

The hospital established Iraq’s first and largest specialized liver transplant center, equipped with advanced medical technologies, modern operating theaters, intensive care units, and recovery facilities that meet international standards.

Dr. Ismail added that the success of the surgeries will help reduce the need for Iraqi patients to travel abroad for advanced medical treatment and reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen and localize healthcare services within Iraq.
