UN reports high toll among women and girls in Gaza
UN Women has reported that more than 38,000 women and girls have been killed over a two-year period as a result of airstrikes and ground operations—an average of at least 47 female deaths per day.
The agency stated that the figure includes over 22,000 women and 16,000 girls, while cautioning that the actual toll may be higher due to bodies remaining under rubble and ongoing challenges in documentation.
Spokesperson Sophia Kaltrop noted that mortality rates among women and girls exceed those recorded in previous rounds of fighting in Gaza Strip. She added that survivors continue to face severe daily risks, including hunger, repeated displacement, and limited access to essential services.
Official figures and UN estimates indicate that the overall death toll in Gaza, as of the end of 2025, has reached tens of thousands, with discrepancies between data released by the Gaza Ministry of Health and independent assessments.
Meanwhile, a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs indicated that the death toll reported by the Gaza Ministry of Health had surpassed 71,000, with approximately 171,000 injured by late December 2025.
In a related development, a study published in The Lancet estimated that direct violent deaths up to January 5, 2025, reached around 75,000. This figure is in addition to thousands of indirect deaths linked to the blockade and the collapse of the healthcare system, suggesting that the true toll by the end of 2025 likely exceeds officially reported figures.
