The cardiac catheterization team at Imam Zain Al-Abideen Teaching Hospital—affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine—successfully treated a patient suffering from a rare and critical blockage at the origin of the left main coronary artery without the need for open-heart surgery.

Mustafa Al-Mousawi, the hospital’s media officer, stated that the medical team performed an emergency cardiac catheterization procedure on a patient diagnosed with the severe blockage, a condition considered complex and uncommon worldwide.

He explained that the patient’s condition suddenly deteriorated, leading to cardiac arrest. The medical team immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before proceeding with an urgent interventional catheterization procedure, avoiding the need for open-heart surgery.

The team successfully reopened the artery using a specialized balloon and implanted a drug-eluting stent using the “Flare” technique, which involves slight protrusion of the stent into the aorta to ensure proper placement. The procedure was completed successfully.

Following the intervention, the patient was transferred to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit for observation and continued treatment. After two days of monitoring, the patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital in stable condition.

The case was supervised by cardiology and cardiac catheterization specialist Dr. Hadaf Essam Al-Abidi, with the assistance of medical technicians Ahmed Al-Shammari, Karrar Jabbar, and Ibrahim Al-Sirwan.

This achievement reflects the ongoing efforts of the health institutions affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine to provide advanced medical care using modern technologies, contributing to saving lives and enhancing healthcare services for citizens.
