Demand for halal food is increasing across Japan as Muslims observe Ramadan, the Islamic holy month during which believers fast from dawn to sunset. This year, Ramadan began in late February and continues through March.

After sunset, Muslims break their daily fast with iftar meals, leading to a noticeable rise in demand for halal-certified food products. In Tokyo’s Ueno district—an area known for its international visitors and foreign residents—halal grocery stores have reported strong sales of various food items.

Shop owners say customers are purchasing large quantities of meat, spices, packaged foods, and especially dates, which are traditionally used to break the fast in accordance with the Sunnah of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).

A store manager noted that dates are among the most sought-after items during Ramadan, reflecting their cultural and religious significance for Muslim consumers.

With the Muslim population in Japan gradually increasing, halal specialty stores are playing a growing role in supporting diverse food cultures and meeting the needs of both residents and international visitors observing the holy month.
