Al-Azhar University to establish Faculty of Quranic Sciences and Recitations
A new Faculty of Quranic Sciences and Recitations will be established in Egypt at the request of Ahmed El-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar.
The Egyptian Prime Ministerial Council, chaired by Mostafa Madbouly, has approved the creation of the Faculty of Quranic Recitations and Sciences at Al-Azhar University. The decision follows a review of the Egyptian Constitution and Law No. 103 of 1961 concerning the reorganization of Al-Azhar and its affiliated institutions, along with its executive regulations. It was also endorsed by the Supreme Council of Al-Azhar upon the recommendation of the Grand Imam.
According to the decision, which has been published in the official gazette, the new faculty will have two branches: one for male students and one for female students.
The boys’ branch will be based at the Faculty of Islamic Call in Cairo, while the girls’ branch will operate from the Faculty of Islamic and Arabic Studies for Girls, also in Cairo. Academic instruction at both branches is scheduled to begin in the 2026/2027 academic year.
The announcement comes during the holy month of Ramadan, a time when Egyptians traditionally show heightened devotion to reciting and reflecting upon the Holy Quran.
