Hundreds gather for Ramadan iftar in New York’s Times Square
Hundreds of Muslims marked the holy month of Ramadan with a public iftar gathering in Times Square, one of New York City’s most iconic and busiest locations, over the weekend.
As sunset approached, participants assembled at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue to break their fast together. Following the call to prayer, worshippers shared dates and water before performing Maghrib prayers in congregation, drawing the attention of passersby and tourists in the bustling square.
Organizers distributed approximately 1,500 free meal packages to attendees, ensuring that all participants could take part in the communal fast-breaking. In addition, around 1,200 copies of the Quran were handed out during the event.
Event organizers said the gathering aimed to foster understanding and counter negative portrayals of Islam in some Western media. “Our purpose here is to explain the Quran to people, educate them, and inform the world about Islam,” one organizer stated.
They added that the event was also about building bridges within the broader community: “We want you to connect with us and understand that our culture is your culture. Come, sit with us. Come, eat with us. Come, break your fast with us and enjoy this beautiful month of Ramadan with us.”
