South Korea has opened its first permanent Islamic art gallery at the National Museum of Korea in Seoul, marking a significant milestone in the country’s engagement with Islamic culture and artistic heritage.

The new gallery, titled “Islamic Art: A Magnificent Journey,” was inaugurated on Friday and developed in collaboration with the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. Museum officials stated that the partnership aims to introduce Korean audiences to the richness and diversity of Islamic artistic traditions, showcasing centuries of craftsmanship from across the Muslim world.

The exhibition presents a carefully curated selection of artworks known for their intricate ornamentation, geometric sophistication, and the wide variety of materials that characterize Islamic art from regions spanning the Middle East to Central and South Asia. The collection highlights the evolution and spread of Islamic aesthetics over many centuries.

Leaders at the National Museum say the gallery represents an important step in strengthening cultural exchange between South Korea and the Islamic world, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the artistic and cultural legacies of Muslim societies.

Founded in 1945 and housing more than 220,000 artifacts, the National Museum of Korea is the country’s foremost institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing Korean history and culture. It also serves as a center for research in archaeology, history, and the arts, and regularly hosts educational programs and special exhibitions.

The Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar, established in 2008 and designed by renowned architect I. M. Pei, holds one of the world’s most extensive Islamic art collections, featuring masterpieces from across various regions and eras.
