Pakistan spends over $2.24 billion during the first ten days of Muharram
In a recent field report, Pakistan’s Geo News revealed that spending across the country during the first ten days of Muharram exceeded $2.24 billion, or approximately 623.85 billion Pakistani rupees. According to the report, this amount was allocated primarily to food (langar), free services (subul), and religious vows (nizr), as recorded up to 11:00 p.m. on the night of Ashura (the 10th of Muharram).
The report emphasized that this figure is a preliminary and conservative estimate, while on-the-ground indicators suggest the actual amount is likely much higher. This is attributed to the widespread presence of Hussaini mourning ceremonies and volunteer work associated with the commemoration of Ashura.
Geo News also highlighted that this wave of religious and charitable spending is not limited to the first ten days of Muharram, but continues throughout the months of Muharram and Safar across towns and cities in Pakistan. This ongoing devotion reflects the deep-rooted cultural and spiritual connection Pakistanis have with the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and the timeless values of sacrifice, and justice and devoutness associated with it.
