The Refrigeration Division of the Engineering and Technical Projects Department at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has launched a special plan to maintain a healthy and comfortable environment for pilgrims during the commemoration of Muharram.

According to Engineer Safaa Ali Hussein, head of the division, the plan centers on operating advanced, high-capacity central cooling systems within the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them).

Hussein explained that the cooling infrastructure includes systems with a total capacity of 9,000 tons, with special emphasis on securing the entry and exit points used by pilgrims, especially during mass gatherings like the Tuwaireej Run.

The plan features a range of cooling technologies, including dual fans, misting fans, and locally developed coolers produced at the Al-Warith Factory, which is affiliated with the Holy Shrine. In addition, air pumps supply 100% fresh air, helping to increase oxygen levels and reduce risks associated with sunstroke and suffocation.

Interior temperatures are regulated between 24°C and 26°C (75.2–78.8°F) to minimize health risks caused by temperature fluctuations between indoor and outdoor areas. The system also includes advanced controls for managing positive and negative air pressure throughout the shrine. This setup helps to expel contaminated air, reduce respiratory issues, and ensure air quality, all overseen by skilled Iraqi engineers.

Through these comprehensive technical measures, the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of millions of pilgrims visiting Karbala during Muharram, especially during peak events such as the Tuwaireej Run, ensuring that Karbala continues to stand as a beacon of loyalty, service, and sacrifice.
