Secretary-General of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine announces completion of preparations for Banner Replacement Ceremony amid critical times
The Secretary-General of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, Mr. Hassan Rashid Al-Abayechi, confirmed that this year's ceremony to replace the banner (flag) atop the dome of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) comes at a particularly critical moment. He noted that the sacred occasion coincides with escalating challenges faced by the followers and Shia of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), who are currently subjected to intense attacks by hostile forces.
In an interview with the Holy Shrine’s official website, Mr. Al-Abayechi said, “The Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has undertaken a series of preparations for the approaching month of sorrow. The ceremonies will commence on the eve of Muharram with the replacement of the red banner atop the holy dome with a black one, symbolizing the beginning of the annual mourning rituals. This year’s program introduces new elements that set it apart from previous years."
He explained that one of the key changes is the introduction of a newly designed platform at the Qibla Gate to receive and welcome pilgrims. This platform has been organized in a new way to reduce overcrowding within the Holy Shrine, allowing pilgrims more space and ease in performing their visitation and prayer rituals. The number of pilgrims continues to grow each year due to the spiritual significance of the occasion.
Mr. Al-Abayechi emphasized that the Holy Shrine has completed all necessary preparations. Meetings have been held with department heads and representatives from medical, security, engineering, and other service teams to coordinate efforts and ensure a unified plan is in place. These arrangements are intended to provide pilgrims with a safe and smooth experience during this important event, which holds wide-reaching spiritual and global importance.
He noted that the timing of this year’s banner replacement is particularly meaningful given the broader regional context. The followers of Ahlulbayt (peace be upon them), especially the Shia community, are enduring aggressive attacks, particularly from the Zionist entity. In this context, the banner replacement becomes more than a religious ritual — it is a powerful message of endurance, faith, and resistance.
"This occasion sends a clear message to the enemies of Islam and humanity," he stated. "Muslims remain alive, steadfast, and proud. We refuse humiliation and submission, standing firm under the banner of the Master of Martyrs, Abu Abdullah Al-Hussain (peace be upon him), and under the guidance of the Supreme Religious Authority."
He concluded by reaffirming that all logistical, health, and security preparations have been finalized. "We are fully ready to receive a large number of pilgrims from inside and outside Iraq. Every effort has been made to ensure the success of this sacred event."
