French Muslims feel unsafe, says council amid political Islam report
The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) has warned that Muslims in France increasingly feel under "constant suspicion" following the leak of excerpts from a government-commissioned report on political Islam.
Published by Le Figaro, the report titled “Political Islamism and the Muslim Brotherhood” was prepared for the Defense Council. The CFCM criticized it for using vague terms and lacking clear definitions, warning that it risks fueling fear, confusion, and discrimination.
"Many Muslim citizens today feel unsafe," the CFCM said in a statement. "Vague accusations and poorly defined concepts contribute to stigmatization and can have serious consequences, including threats to personal safety and attacks on places of worship."
The group called for a more precise, evidence-based approach in combating extremism, cautioning against sweeping generalizations that could unjustly target Muslim individuals and institutions.
"The authorities must avoid ideological misuse of these issues and ensure clarity to prevent fear, hatred, and societal division," the CFCM added.
