United Nations: Israel's attacks on Palestinian hospitals may be a war crime
“A human rights catastrophe is still unfolding in Gaza before the eyes of the world,” said United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for Human Rights Volker Turk. He added that Israel's methods have resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, widespread displacement, and destruction, raising serious concerns about compliance with international law.
During a security session on Israeli attacks on Gaza’s hospitals, Turk referenced a recent report from his office covering the period from October 7, 2023 to June 30, 2024. The report documented attacks on hospitals, beginning with Israeli air strikes, followed by assaults by ground forces, and the detention of patients and staff, leaving hospitals unable to function.
Turk emphasized the importance of protecting hospitals during conflicts, stating that this should be respected by all parties at all times.
The UN human rights chief highlighted that failure to respect these principles is a violation of international humanitarian law. He stated, “Deliberate attacks on hospitals and places where patients and the wounded are treated, as they are not military targets, constitute a war crime. In certain circumstances, the deliberate destruction of healthcare facilities can amount to collective punishment, which is also a war crime.”
On Friday, the UN Security Council held a meeting to discuss the Israeli attacks on health facilities in the Gaza Strip.
